1. The Sandwich Swap- Queen Rania of Jordan
A light hearted story about two girls named Salma and Lily who are best friends. One day for lunch, one of the little girls brings a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and the other brings a hummus and pita sandwich. Both girls think the lunch of the other looks “strange and gross.” The story tells how the girls try each other’s sandwiches and renew their friendship with a better cultural understanding.
2. Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns- Hena Khan
A nice learning book that uses Islamic clothing, objects, and symbols to teach colors to young children. This is a really nice book because it shows children scenes from street and home life in Middle Eastern countries they may not have seen before living in the West.
3. Whoever You Are- Mem Fox & Leslie Staub
This is a wonderful book about celebrating the differences in the world and acknowledging the beauty in our similarities and differences. The book talks about how although people may look different, live in different houses, and speak different languages, everybody has similar hearts.
4. Ilyas and Duck Search for Allah- Omar Khawaja
A very sweet book about a little boy and his duck that are searching the world in his dreams asking animals the question, “Where is Allah?” The animals give wise and beautiful answers that help children to understand the concept of Allah and His capabilities.
5. The Little Girl Says Alhumdulillah- Rabia Gelgi
A book about a little girl and her kitten who thinks we have many things to be grateful for. The book outlines all the things the little girl is thankful for in her life and teaches about gratitude.
6. It’s Ramadan, Curious George- H. A. Rey
Curious George and the man in the yellow hat are celebrating Ramadan with their friend Kareem! George the monkey is curious about Ramadan and he helps bake sweets, prepare for Eid, and even helps his friend to fast.
7. It’s a Small World- Richard M. Sherman
A very cute and well-illustrated book made for the words of the Disney song “It’s a Small World.” The book teaches that there are many different types of people in the world who come from many different places and cultures in a fun and cheerful way.
